A Plea for Change: The Riverside City Council Election

In the shadow of the looming Riverside City Council election, it’s evident that the City of Riverside stands at a crossroads. With the rising tide of challenges such as homelessness, increased crime, economic decline, and a shifting commercial landscape, it’s never been more urgent for our city to critically evaluate its leadership and demand a fresh approach.

The Riverside We Remember

Riverside, once a thriving city known for its community spirit and business-friendly environment, has witnessed a gradual decline. Today, we’re grappling with a homelessness and vagrancy crisis. Crime rates are spiking, businesses are shutting their doors, and the shift to warehouse-only commercial entities threatens the economic vibrancy of our city.

Furthermore, there are concerns about overpaid staffing paired with underserved city services. Despite the high sales taxes and bond payments shouldered by Riverside residents, our city services seem to be crumbling. Streets remain riddled with potholes, and simple services like timely trash pickups are often overlooked.

Who’s Behind the Curtain?

As the City Council election nears, it’s crucial for Riverside residents to be discerning. We must question: Who truly backs our candidates? Is it grassroots, citizen taxpayer-driven support, or is it the influence of the “old money – country club crowd”? Are we seeing genuine local leaders rise, or are young candidates being propped up by insiders seeking to control them?

Scrutinizing the fundraising sources and understanding where the money flows can offer clarity on who genuinely has Riverside’s best interests at heart.

Breaking Away from a Failing Status Quo

Governor Newsom’s approach and single-party agenda, with its roots in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, have shown concerning outcomes. It’s evident in the rising homelessness, crime rates, and failing public services. There’s a push towards high-density housing, but without adequate infrastructure, this only seems to invite more challenges, stretching our city services even thinner.

Can we genuinely expect a remedy from the very individuals and groups who have contributed to our city’s problems? The current officeholders, staff, and advisors connected with the existing administration have had their chance. It’s evident that a change is long overdue.

The Path Forward

Riverside’s redemption lies in the hands of its citizens. By being actively involved in the election process, we can transition from the stifling grip of the “old boy’s network” and rally behind candidates genuinely committed to bringing transformative change.

It’s time for Riverside to break free from the chains of stagnation and reclaim its position as a prosperous, safe, and community-driven city. This City Council election presents an invaluable opportunity. Let’s make our voices heard and steer Riverside towards a brighter, more sustainable future.
